What is Dysport®?

Wrinkles form as the muscles under our skin contracts. When we frown, laugh, smile, or express emotions, these muscles relax and contract consistently which makes them more and more visible. Dysport is a new and innovative wrinkle erasing injectable that gives other similar treatments such as Botox a run for its money. Dysport works by countering the effects of muscles underneath the skin by weakening their ability to contract, which then stops the skin from creasing. It is a non-invasive treatment that is injected under the skin to “freeze” the muscles in the target area.

How does Dysport® Work?

Dysport® is a neuromodulator, similar to Botox®, that affects the way the facial nerves signal the muscles to contract. When placed near certain muscle groups, Dysport® can temporarily block nerve signals telling the muscles to contract, resulting in less noticeable lines between the brows. While Dysport® and Botox® work in similar ways, Dysport® diffuses a little further away, resulting in quicker improvements.

Am I a Candidate for Dysport®?

The ideal Dysport patient will have mild to moderate aging symptoms in the upper face and reasonable expectations about the results of a Dysport treatment. Dysport® has specific contraindications, however, which include: bladder control issues, breathing difficulties, difficulty swallowing, double vision or blurred vision, Lou Gehrig’s disease, myasthenia gravis (an autoimmune muscle condition), and peripheral nerve disorder.

Who is NOT a Suitable Candidate for Dysport®?

Below are some of the characteristics of someone who is not suitable for Botox:

• Has an allergy to any of the ingredients in Botox (e.g. the protein found in eggs is also the same protein found in Botox)
• Has a severe infection or illness, including neuromuscular conditions or diabetes
• Is taking medications, such as antibiotics that are aminoglycosides, which can interfere with the effects of Botox
• Has very thick facial skin or deep facial scars
• Has ptosis (or drooping eyelids) or any other existing weakness in any of the target muscles
• Has significant facial asymmetry

What Can I Expect from Dysport® Injection?

Dysport produces fast results. Patients often see improvements to their aging concerns within two to three days of having their Dysport treatment. Most patients, however, see their results develop during the first seven days after having Dysport. However, the rejuvenating effects of the treatment will continue to develop for up to four months after their last injections. To maintain these results, patients will require periodic touch-ups, and your medical provider at Womens Health Services of Maryland can recommend the optimal number of Dysport sessions to have annually based on your responsiveness to the treatment and the severity of your fine lines and wrinkles.

Will Dysport® Results Show Right Away?

No. Patients that receive Dysport injections start noticing a difference in their facial muscles about two to three days after the injections. Full effect of the Dysport injection can take up to two weeks.

What Should I Avoid after Dysport® Treatment?

For 4 hours after treatment, you need to keep your head and neck upright. Do not bend over, lie flat, or place your head against a pillow. Allow at least 4 hours to pass before touching, pressing, or manipulating the treated areas.

How often Do I need Dysport® Injections?

Typically, when you begin Dysport injections you will need to repeat the process every three to four months. Patients report that with repeated injections they can go longer in between treatments. Some patients have their Dysport injections once per year because they have been getting this highly effective wrinkle treatment on a regular basis.

How Much Does Dysport® Injection Cost?
